What is your hobby?

I tend to favor photography and painting more or less equally, particularly since they seem to complement each other so well.

How did you get started with this hobby? What inspired you?

I’ve done oil painting for many years now, but my kids recently became so interested in photography that it inspired me to take it up as a hobby as well.

Tell us what you love about it.

Both photography and painting are wonderful excuses to spend extended periods of time with nature, and the fact that my kids are interested in photography has given us another shared interest that we can all enjoy together.

Are there any groups you’re a part of or events that you attend related to your hobby?

I attend the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk just about every month, and I am always looking for new classes to further develop my painting skills.

Have you had to invest in equipment and if so, please share some of the things you’ve bought.

I have several different cameras and lens combinations for different purposes that I’ve bought over the years, and I have invested quite a bit on canvases, brushes and oil paints as well.

Where do you buy most of your supplies?

The specialty stores in my neighborhood tend to carry whatever I happen to need, but there are times when I’ll use an online store to order something a bit harder-to-find.

Are there any good books for beginners?

The Audubon Society has a great book for beginners, but my personal recommendation for a beginner would be “Mountain Light,” by Galen Rowell.

How has this changed your life?

It’s very easy to get caught up in a professional career and lose touch with your creative side, but these hobbies have really enabled me to cultivate a deeper appreciation for creative pursuits.

What advice do you have for others starting out with this hobby?

I try not to compare my work with the work of others, so my advice is to enjoy the hobby for its own sake.

Are there any other hobbies you have?

I don’t have any other hobbies I take as seriously as photography or painting, particularly since I prefer to spend any time I have away from my dental practice with my family.
