Dr. Troy Dreiling – Owner, Zenaptic Chiropractic

Dr Troy HobbyJam

An avid fan of working out, Dr. Troy Dreiling has been in the chiropractic field since he opened his practice in 1995. His clinic, Zenaptic Chiropractic has been a 5-time recipient of the Best of Clark County Reader’s Choice Awards.

Contrary to what people believe about chiropractors only treating neck and back pains, Dr. Troy has used it to relieve various ailments, including but not limited to asthma, sinus problems, and high blood pressure. He has also used it to help babies who are suffering from colic.

For Dr. Troy Dreiling, the nerve system runs the entire body and by increasing the function of the spine and the nerves, the body will then be able to heal itself.

What is your hobby?

One of my most favorite hobbies is working out. Lifting weights, spinning, stretching, and yoga. Things that shift my physiology to make me feel better, more relaxed and more energized.

I also like to tinker around the house. Ever since we were married, my wife never thought I wanted to anything and I would constantly surprise her. She always says stuff like, I didn’t think you had it in you, you built that, you mowed the lawn, you cleaned this, you fixed that.

So doing that and hanging around the house with my kids.

How did you get started with weight lifting? What inspired you?

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu (he’s a chiropractor now) those guys inspired me. I looked at Arnold’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. I was in junior high and I wanted to look like Arnold and be Arnold, so that’s what got me into weightlifting. Ultimately that’s what got me into chiropractic.

Tell us what you love about it.

I like the pump, feeling the blood flow, feeling stronger and knowing that I am getting stronger and feeling stronger. I also like the flexibility aspect, where I keep my joints flexible and mobile. Working on bodies all day long, it keeps me strong and allows me not to break down.

Are there any groups you’re a part of or events that you attend related to your hobby?

I regularly go to the International Chiropractor Association symposium on fitness and health. Arnold Schwarzenegger shows up there every year, I have met him multiple times. There is a lot of cutting edge stuff in chiropractic technology and on how fitness and chiropractic really, really go together.

Have you had to invest in equipment and if so, please share some of the things you’ve bought?

I definitely have invested in equipment. I have a spin bike at home just like you would see at the gym. I bought a nice treadmill, a stair climber, weights and some other different things at my house. I like to get up in the morning and work out, take a shower, I don’t have to worry about travel time. I once worked out in the gym but the travel time from work to the gym and from the gym to my house was just too much so I bought my own equipment.

So, yeah, I have invested in equipment. I also have a coach that monitors me. I have a heart rate monitor. It’s all about physiology and nerve system integrity. If you have the drive, you can surely get fit.

Where do you buy most of your supplies?

I have a guy in Portland, I can’t remember the name. Northwest Physical Equipment or Northwest Personal Equipment. I also bought some of my equipment online and had them shipped to my home.

Is it better to purchase sports and fitness equipment online or by going personally to a store?

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. When you buy equipment online, you save plenty of time because you do not have to go to the store. Dimensions, as well as pictures are posted making it easier for the buyer to know which one to get. However, you will not be able to try the equipment.

When you personally go to the store, you can try the equipment and have a good feel for it before you purchase it. I like to do a little of both, shop online and go to the store.

Are there any good books for beginners?

I think one of the best books on weight lifting, if you are into that, is the Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding. It shows you all of the different weight maneuvers you’re going to do. It really is an amazing book and it is instrumental to my journey to fitness and well-being.

How has this changed your life?

Number one, I see these kids that don’t get into sports or something that keeps them physically active and some of them can tend to get into trouble. I look back and say that being involved in fitness and sports has definitely kept me out of harm’s way and trouble. It has made a huge difference in my life and it has made me into a better person and I think that we can help plenty of children through sports and fitness.

What advice do you have for others starting out with this hobby?

Go slow, go easy, and don’t try to rush it. The biggest thing is to not create injuries. If it hurts don’t do it or modify it and go slower, change it up. Make sure you’re resting and staying hydrated and eat clean and proper nutrition.

What does your diet consist of?

Being fit and being healthy takes more than just exercising religiously. Diet also plays a huge part. There are foods, which you must avoid and foods which you need to have in your diet. You have to cut out bad food and enjoy more of the good food. Protein is very important and some of the good sources of protein are egg, tuna, lean ground beef, skinless chicken breast, cod, sea bass and swordfish.

Aside from protein you also need carbohydrates and good sources of carbohydrates are fruit, oatmeal, brown rice, and vegetables. If you eat the right food, you will see better results. However, this does not mean that you should prevent yourself from indulging once in awhile.

How often should a person exercise?

Generally, it is good to aim for at least 30 minutes exercise daily. However, if you want to lose weight or you are out to meet a specific goal, you need to exercise more.
