Aldo DeCesare is an avid fisherman located in Savannah, GA, who often takes to the waters of Lake Thurmond in search of the following big catch. Aldo works as a Senior Consultant with Decks & Docks where he helps pick out the best dock building supplies for his clients. However, on the weekends, he enjoys teaching children how to fish at his local Sportsmans Club.
Aldo eventually hopes to start his own Fishermans Club at Lake Thurmond, where he hopes to be able to host a safe place for men, women, and children to enjoy the relaxing hobby he has come to love. He intends to teach attendees the basics of fishing and especially how to stay safe in and out of the water.
What is your hobby?
For twenty-plus years, I’ve fished along the shores of Lake Thurmond. And in those times, two things never change – The sun rising over our shoulder as we sit on a log waiting for the bass to bite; or watching them jumping out at you right before they’re caught!
How did you get started with this hobby? What inspired you?
My Dad knew two loves in his life, his family and his fishing boat. I believe I was holding a fishing pole before I held a rattle. After Trade School, I fell out of the whole thing. You know, life gets busy sometimes. Then my Dad passed, and it felt wrong to let his passion die. So I picked my old rods back up and took them to the lake again.
Tell us what you love about it.
What is not to love about it? Nothing beats sitting out on the open water, a nice hot cup of joe in your hands, watching the sunrise slowly into the sky. There’s also the thrill of watching the bobber dip below the water and knowing you have something big on the end of your hook. I’d have to say the only part I’m not too crazy about is coming back into the dock!
Are there any groups you’re a part of or events that you attend related to your hobby?
I was blessed to find a job that was somewhat related to my hobby. With the name Decks and Docks, you can assume what I mean. I love boating and being out on the water, so helping others do it safely by building high-quality docks with only the best dock building supplies means a lot to me, and I think a lot to my Dad.
Have you had to invest in equipment, and if so, please share some of the things you’ve bought.
You have to invest in pretty much any hobby. Even a hobby as simple as running requires an investment in either a good pair of shoes or a treadmill. I have had to buy supplies such as lures and your simple everyday Fisherman’s gear. However, my most significant investment was probably my 2022 Lund 1650 Angler Sport Boat. I didn’t want my Dad’s old boat to be so run down that it disintegrated beneath me, so I have his kept in my pole barn, and I went out and bought that brand new Lund. It comes with all the bells and whistles and brings comfort to the lake.
Where do you buy most of your supplies?
While I sometimes hit up the more prominent name outdoors shopping centers, I tend to pick up most of my smaller equipment like lures from local ma and pa shops. I like to support the smaller businesses where I can, plus they tend to have different equipment than your bigger chain stores.
Are there any good books for beginners?
Anything that says “Fishing” and “Basics” in the title should be good. I have also had people tell me the book “Fishing for Dummies” has helped them. I highly recommend watching youtube videos if you have good enough internet where you are. Some people are visual learners. Don’t forget to hit up your local Sportsmans club, as this can be a great place to learn from the ‘old-timers who have been doing this their whole lives.
How has this changed your life?
I wouldn’t say fishing has changed my life at all. Instead, it has become my life. Since I was a kid, everything has been shaped around fishing with my Dad. Even now, as I said before, after trade school, I still managed to nab a job relatively within my hobby scope, plus I teach kids the secrets to fishing on the weekends. It’s who I am; I bleed chicken liver and black coffee. Ha!
What advice do you have for others starting with this hobby?
Have fun! This is a relaxing hobby, so kick back and relax! If you need help, reach out to your local Sportsman’s club or ask someone at your local outdoors store what equipment you need to get started and what is beginner-friendly.
Are there any other hobbies you have?
I enjoy working with my hands, and when I have the time, I do woodworking in my pole barn. I have a project that might take a year or two, but I want to build my boat.
