What is your hobby?

I used to play cricket with far greater frequency, but I took up the game of golf several years ago.

How did you get started with this hobby? What inspired you?

A good friend of mine plays quite a bit, so he loaned me a set of clubs to use while I learned how to play.

Tell us what you love about it.

It’s a quiet and contemplative sport, but there is also the opportunity for in-depth conversation during the course of an 18-hole round.

Are there any groups you’re a part of or events that you attend related to your hobby?

Even though I’m still relatively new to the sport, I joined one of the local country clubs and I play with a few different groups through the club.

Have you had to invest in equipment and if so, please share some of the things you’ve bought.

I invested in a set of clubs and a new golf bag, and I recently set up a net that I can hit into for practice when I’m away from the course.

Where do you buy most of your supplies?

My club has a pro shop that carries all of the supplies I need, and I have found that it is much cheaper to use a ball retriever to get balls out of the lake rather than buying them new.

Are there any good books for beginners?

David Feherty really opened my eyes to the lighter side of the sport, and any one of his books would be helpful for beginners.

How has this changed your life?

Golf has given me a new avenue through which I can bond with nature while getting to know my playing partners on a much deeper level than ever before.

What advice do you have for others starting out with this hobby?

It’s a good idea to spend more time on the range than on the course, and I’ve never regretted spending money on a lesson with a golf pro.

Are there any other hobbies you have?

When I feel the need to truly unwind, I enjoy painting quite a bit. I tend to prefer oils, but lately I have been experimenting with the use of watercolors.
