What is your hobby?

My favorite hobby to do in my spare time is hiking. I love getting outside and getting some fresh air. I enjoy hiking anywhere I can and love seeing different trails and scenery. But one of my favorite places locally would be Japanese Gulch. It’s so convenient to head out there whenever I need some time to clear my mind.

How did you get started with this hobby?

My body was craving movement and the outdoors. I needed some way to get exercise and get outside more. I tried walking to Starbucks but walking on city streets is very boring for me. I would much rather get out into nature if at all possible.

Tell us what you love about your hobby.

The aspect I love most about my hobby is that I’m able to get close to nature. I think most people spend so much time inside or staring at a screen all day. Getting outside for a little bit of time is a great change of pace. I love everything I see on the trails too! All the different trees and wildlife.

What types of things/equipment have you spent money on for your hobby?

My hobby doesn’t require much gear or anything specific. Just some comfortable/athletic clothes and shoes!

What are some of your favorite places to shop for your hobby?

That’s an aspect of my hobby that is so great! Since it doesn’t require much equipment, almost anyone can do it. I personally think that Merrell shoes are nice.

How much money have you invested into this? How much would a beginner have to invest to get started?

3x shoes. $100 each pair.

Are there any good books for beginners?

I’ve read A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson about rediscovering America on the Appalachian trail. As far as getting into hiking goes though, I don’t necessarily think you need to read a book to get started. This hobby is more about just going out and exploring.

Are there any online videos you recommend to help beginners?

Any youtube video on “Hiking for Beginners” will search some really great tips and tricks if you’ve never hiked before. I don’t have any specific video.

How has your hobby changed your life?

It changes my day and my outlook, which in turn, changes my life. I’m very grateful for every chance I get to hike.

What advice do you have for others starting out with this hobby?

Just have fun with it! Look up local hiking trails in your area and get outside, explore, and enjoy.
